The Kanahele ‘ohana, inspired by his wife Ivy, has established a $1,000 scholarship in memory of Herman Kanahele, Jr. (Castle High School Class of 1973) to support a Castle High senior, starting with the Class of 2026 and continuing in the years ahead.
Herman grew up in Kāneʻohe and was a proud Castle Knight before going on to the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa on a football scholarship. He spent his life giving back—working with youth, serving the community as a Handi-Van and Bus driver, and later as a longshoreman for nearly 30 years. He was known for his strong faith, love for his ‘ohana, and always being ready to help others. Whether through service, music, or just showing up, Herman lived with true aloha.
This scholarship carries on that legacy, recognizing a student who shows good character, works hard, and gives back to the community. The $1,000 award will support one student over four years as they continue their journey after high school.
Mahalo to Ivy and the Kanahele ‘ohana for this beautiful way of honoring Herman and uplifting our Castle community.
